You could put up adverts that you can make yourself in shops and local places or the bigger towns. Good time of year for that. One of my sisters used to do that and she just made her own wee posters with one of her paintings as an example and her telephone number. Try that and see.

Well you could practice by painting portraits of your friends' kids. If you know they would give you an honest opinion and if they say the portraits are good enough, then simply put cards in windows. Some shops will let you leave your business cards in there, as may the library. You can have business cards printed quite cheaply and even the supermarket will let you put them there. This would be a great time to advertise your services as it's just before Christmas. What a fantastic Christmas gift for a grandma! a portrait of her grandchild! It would be unique and irreplaceable. How wonderful that would be. I definitely think you should do it. Another idea of course is to paint pictures of people's pets. I personally would pay for that - my cat and my mother's dogs. It would be especially good if you could paint such portraits using photographs instead of having to have Furry Features in front of you. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be a howling success!

(By the way - how would you paint a white cat with pink ears and nose - on white paper?)

you need to complete a portrait of someone who is well-connected, even if you do it for almost no charge. Your MP/mayor/a local celebrity? perhaps do it in return for their contribution to a local charity, get this featured in the newspapers. (This is a double-whammy, the subject gets extra publicity and so do you)
