There are still a few left that have not changed. I don't think privatise is the correct term. However all those that are still Friendly Societies which are owned by the investors have plugged that particular loop hole. They say that should they change they will only pay the bonus to investors that were members up to a particular date. That date is usually way back now so that new investors will not qualify.
Put your money into a tax free ISA for the best return from a building society. There are some around at over 5% now.

Yes but they make you sign a no shares agreement before they will let you open an account!!! Stops speculators like you from putting £100 in each to get a share hand out when they demutualise!

The Co-Op is very unlikly to demutualise so if they have good products feel free to invest with them but don't expect a windfall in the near future!

If you are in the UK the Nationwide Building Society may be a good bet, I just opened an account there and didn't have to sign anything declaring I wouldn't be entitled to shares.

Nationwide are still mutual but all new accounts are barred from any possible future windfall. Its in their TCs. Have a think about investing in a pension plan.

No you won't get anything if/when they go private because they're all on to that trick and you get told right from the start that it won't happen, so you can swallow that idea !
