Subject matter experts? I would imagine there's quite a bit! Tons of subjects times tons of experts = boatloads of SME's!

Well, I know that you are referring to Small and Medium Enterprises.

Difficult to know which definition you want to use. The UK HMRC use one definition for capital allowances (definition driven by Company Law) and there is another EU definition.

I doubt anyone knows the definitive number as there are different definitions but here's a quote from 'Wikipedia'

"In most economies, smaller enterprises predominate. In the EU, SMEs comprise approximately 99% of all firms and employ between them about 65 million people."

On this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_and_Medium-sized_Enterprise
you'll also find links to documents providing data on number of SMEs - not sure if its what you're after.

Good luck.
