I have heard of corporate policies in place where a company will let their employees work (donate their time) at non-profits and will write the time off. I don't know if it is a tax write-off or just a good will gesture. Perhaps there is some other way to adjust their accounting numbers than allows them to deduct the employees time ($) somehow?

Thank you!

Recently I sold an antique for 12,000 that I had bought for my personal use in 2004 at a cost of 15,000.
In my 2007 tax return, can I treat the sale of the antqiue as a transaction resulting in long-term capital loss?

Refund was delayed, got a letter that said wait three weeks and call. Called and was told to wait 45 more days for contact. Coming up on 45 days now and still nothing. I dont owe child support or anything like that. Single, college student. This is the first year I am using my Hope tax credit and I think this may be causing the delay. Ive called three times and whoever I talk to always tells me that there is nothing they can tell me about it. I told them if there is a mistake I want to take care of it. They tell me that there isnt necessarily any problem it was just pulled for a computer audit and that a computer audit is a common thing. So what can I do besides wait?

I have been offered the opportunity of working from home for a foreign employer in the US on a freelance infrequent basis and paid via Paypal. I'm guessing this would involve 10-20 hours per month on average.

As this is a foreign employer, would I need to declare this to the inland revenue (I already work full-time in the uk), and if so, would it be taxed at basic rate 22% - my total income from both jobs is unlikely to exceed the £33,000 mark required for highr rate.

Thanks

I live in New York and contrary to news reports, the average price for 87% octane gas is $3.15 a gallon. It should be noted that New Jersey is on average 42 cents a gallon lower than New York. The news poses a question to it's readers:-
"How would you feel if gasoline was $4.00 a gallon? Isn't anyone going to do something to lower gas prices???? Let's hear from you all out there. What state do you live in and how much do you pay for Gas and how do you feel about it ? Enough Reaction may cause Action and the results could be forwarded to those officials that think they are running for office next term. No silly comments only people who answer the question. Thanks.......

I make about 50,000 a year. I will start paying back student loans toward the end of the year. Where can I go to find a place that will give me a good estimate on how much I would actually be paying in taxes next year. My husband and I would be filing jointly since he has no income for the year. I am trying to figure out the best way to fill out my W4 so that I can at least break even when it comes to tax time. Any help in the matter or a website that would give me the calculators or something would be greatly appreciated.

Say if you provide a service to a company and in return they give you free hotel stays. They deduct the fair market value of the hotel room. Do you deduct the fair market value of the service you provided?

I work at home, and I take the home office deduction. I have a separate room that is my regular office space used exclusively as an office, so that is not the question.

I'm just sure if these are particular items I would be able to deduct. I bought a back pillow from the chiropractor for my typing chair, and I need to buy an air filter for this horrible allergy season and an air conditioner for the home offfice. Are these expenses I can deduct since they will only be used in the home office? Do I need to depreciate them?

When depreciating, is there a minimum dollar amount? The back pillow was only 25 bucks. If I don't depreciate it, what category would that be?

Thanks for any information!! I have looked up a lot of info on this but I'm just not sure about these items.
