Refund was delayed, got a letter that said wait three weeks and call. Called and was told to wait 45 more days for contact. Coming up on 45 days now and still nothing. I dont owe child support or anything like that. Single, college student. This is the first year I am using my Hope tax credit and I think this may be causing the delay. Ive called three times and whoever I talk to always tells me that there is nothing they can tell me about it. I told them if there is a mistake I want to take care of it. They tell me that there isnt necessarily any problem it was just pulled for a computer audit and that a computer audit is a common thing. So what can I do besides wait?

Are you claimed as a dependent on your parent's tax return? If so, you don't get the Hope Credit, they do. That would hold up your refund. If it's just a routine computer audit, there's nothing you can do to speed the process along.

Grab the address off the first letter you got and write to the sender (include names and ID numbers of all those you have spoken with.) There is no excuse for this delay. IF it is a computer audit, it should not take 45 days. Computers are more accurate and faster than human beings. Talk to a supervisor. Someone should be able to answer your questions. Go to the local IRS office in your city. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

You're probably right that it's the education credit causing the delay, if there's nothing else out of the ordinary on your return.

If you meet all the requirements for the credit: can't be claimed by your parents, and you're in your first two years of post-secondary school at an eligible institution, you should be OK, but not much you can do about the delay.

If you filed your return and released your dependency to your parents you cannot take the Hope Credit. Said credit is reserved to the person(s) who take the dependency on their return. If both you and your parents claimed your dependency the IRS will be in touch asking one party or the other to file a 1040X. Tax returns are like a chain and are linked to one another. All parties filing have to be on the same piece of paper with their information.
