I'm an insurance guy and I know that I deduct the cost of my continuing education and designations, licensing, etc. I never finished my college degree the first time around and now I am about a year and a half away from graduation. Since I began the completion of my degree in business after I got into this field with a marketing focus (which will qualify me for the Registered Financial Consultant designation), is there any way that I can deduct this as an educational expense?

I am an officer of an S-Corp, but do not have any ownership and only receive 1099 income. I also hate insurance guys who pretend like their freakin' accountants or lawyers and don't know where to draw the line.

There were two question-and-answer sets for this question but they were inconclusive. See:

Some people say an age over 24 is what makes the answer 'no' in any case. Some people say the answer is always 'no' if you became independant at one point. Some people say it is always 'yes' if you are currently dependant upon your parents, regardless of any other conditions.

So which is it?

I worked at a Texas state institution for 9 years. I separated from the institution and withdrew retirement contributions. After 1 year at another NON-state institution, I then began working at another Texas state institiution where I was allowed to claim my previous years of service and resume the benefits of a vested employee. I am still with this same institution (6 years) and now have 15 years of state service. Upon retirment age, will my total time count, or will they deduct the 9 year of withdrawn contributions?

Unmarried couple bought a house this year and each paying half of the mortgage (property tax included in the loan).
What is the best way to do for income tax filing next year so both of them will benefit from the tax deductions or possible refunds from this house?
Since they are unmarried, each will be filing as SINGLE. Can each put on their Tax returns the amount they paid/shared on the mortgage (half each)?

So, since I've already received my return, can I file an amendment with form 1040X? And, if I CAN still file an amendment, do I need to send in the completed 1040A form, along with any other forms (such as that for the lifetime education credit) that the 1040A would normally require if filed correctly? I overlooked my eligibility for the lifetime education credit when I originally filed, which is why I filed the 1040EZ by mistake. Please advise what I should do!

Hey everyone,

I am a self-employed contractor and have the ability to either charge and pay sales tax directly from my clients to the State (Texas) or have my contracting company pay the sales tax under there business.

Is there any benefit as far as tax deductions go for me to collect and pay the sales tax directly to the state? If there is a tax deduction benefit, then can I use this deduction if I file a Schedule C?

I'm buying a laptop for college and I was wondering if I could write it off on my taxes or if it was any way tax-deductible? Even if only the sales tax (NY State 9%) is deductible, it would still save me about $100.

Anything I can work with?
