My relative is an Indian resident and his daughter is US resident. He sold his house in India and wants to give US $100K to his daughter in US. Would either of them be taxed in US. Since he is not a US resident, would he be liable to pay tax in US? Thanks!

I used to have a shop and filed my own tax report and payments with dept of revenue. Since they do this now (antique mall) and I haven't, and don't intend to actively purchase for this booth at a mall-but rather, look at it as a way to "get rid of" some stuff from my house (which I've sold) I'm sort of looking at it as a garage sale in another place. Is that wrong? I did have to get an occupational license from the town to be there............but I didn't intend to deduct my rent or storage costs-so do I need to keep track of sales and inventory on my own things? If they already pay the tax on sales what is my obligation for paperwork?

Inspired by a previous question as to why the magical number 18 is the dividing line between being an adult or child, when in reality we tend to mature much later (in many cases).

When you file your Income Taxes, you will notice at least two things that seem illogical and unfair.

A baby born on Jan. 1 doesn't get the full year deduction for it's parents as does the same baby born on Dec. 31.

Same holds true for people who get married. They can't get the advantage of "Married filing Jointly".

If you were in Congress, would you propose a law that makes these Income Tax advantages pro-rated on a monthly basis, so that a child would get a twelfth of the benefit for each month.

This may sound ridiculous to you, but serious money is lost on a child who has the disadvantage of being born just after midnight on Jan. 1. Roughly several hundred dollars of benefit is at stake, maybe more depending on the tax bracket.

Maybe folks would want to induce labor sooner over this?

By contract our children must attend the private school system at which my wife teaches. Failure to do so would result in her dismissal. Can we claim the tuition as an employee business expense for income tax purposes?

Every paycheck I get a lot of money taken out of my paycheck for taxes...understandable. I just want to know what factors go into this and maybe a detailed report of each factor and its contribution.

I'm 17 and am working part time for $10/hr. Here is an example of one of my paycheck.

I worked 11.5 hours and so I made $115, but then my employer deducted $17.25 for federal withholding, $7.13 for social security, and $1.67 for medicare. I ended up getting $88.58 after all the deductions that paycheck. This is about 23%.

Now I just asked my sister about hers, and she told me that her paycheck was $126.05 and she lost $13.75 through taxes. This is like 10%.

Why is mine so much higher? Is my employer ripping me off?
