He should have requested your SSN before you started working. Yes, you have to give it to him. Your income needs to be reported to the IRS and SSA and the SSN is needed for that reporting.

BTW, if you have unpaid tax debts, you can not be readmitted either on a work visa or as an immigrant.

He needs it to hire you legally !! It's for tax deductions that will be taken off your check so you don't get stuck paying taxes at the end of the year !! You will get a income tax check at the end of the year when you file your taxes!! If you are here legally you have nothing to worry about !! We all give out our ssn !! It's the law !! Go talk to somebody in the know like the internal revenue department !! Just call them to find out what your rights are !! Have you been working for him already? You said something about working under the table !! In that case don't give it to him or your not working under the table anymore !! You will owe big bucks to the tax department !! Never take a job that pays under the table you sell yourself short and are being used !! Report him for not telling you all the facts about your employment !! lol

Under the table was illegal, and you knew it. I assume you're talking here about your "under the table" job. He wants your ssn because he is going to claim it, and it won't be under the table any more - you'll owe taxes on it. He'll issue a form called a 1099 to you showing what he paid you.

He should of had it before you started working by law. He's trying to cover his butt. Oh, I had a similar situation.
