So, since I've already received my return, can I file an amendment with form 1040X? And, if I CAN still file an amendment, do I need to send in the completed 1040A form, along with any other forms (such as that for the lifetime education credit) that the 1040A would normally require if filed correctly? I overlooked my eligibility for the lifetime education credit when I originally filed, which is why I filed the 1040EZ by mistake. Please advise what I should do!

I filed the taxes myself. Now, form 1040X says, "Form 1040X must
be filed within 3 years after the date you filed the original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later." So, I'm only amending 2006 taxes which is why I believe I'm able to use the 1040X. My question is: do I need to fill out only the 1040X and the education credit form, OR the 1040X, completed 1040A AND the education credit form.

You can file a 1040X. Amending a return to receive a legitimately larger refund is perfectly acceptable. You will only need to file the 1040X and attach the Form 8863 for your education credits to the back. You will not need to prepare a new return on the 1040A.

Some preparers attach a copy of the first page of a 1040EZ behind the 1040X and mark it "As Originally Filed", and then the corrected tax return in full behind that, but it is by no means necessary.

Once you've filed, be prepared to wait a little while. It can take up to 2 or 3 months before you receive a check, although with a small change like yours, it might not take that long.

Hope this helps!

The form you fill out is based on your income and the deductions you are taking, if any, not on your dependency status. Most dependents would not need to bother with the full 1040. You'd use either the 1040EZ or the 1040A. If you are indeed a dependent of your parents and you did NOT check the box on your return that said you could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, then what you must do now is fill out a 1040X (corrected form) and correct that error. You may wind up owing additional tax as a result. That depends on what your total income was last year.

Attach the form showing the education credit to the 1040X amendment form. You don't need to send a competed 1040A form.

if you are eligible for the credit for 2004 and/or 2005, you can also amend those years and get your refund.

File a 1040X.

This is a valid reason for filing an amendment.

No, you don't send the 1040A in with the X. You send in the 1040X along with any forms that have changed or have been added. In your case, send in the 1040X and the 8863 for the education credits.

You will have to file an amendment, but maybe you should contact a professional. I had received my return and then had to file an amendment, but i did mine before the April deadline. Also "I THINK" if its not that much of a large credit to you, you might be able to fix it when you file again next year.

I live in Canada. We are able to make amendments and get our taxes reassessed online... Shouldn't be a problem for you to fix your mistake. If you did it on your own, you should probably call IRS or whoever for support so they can guide you on how to negate your 1040EZ. If you filed through a tax company, they can fix it for you.
