What if you don't want to use your SSN any more can you apply for an ITIN and just begin using that? When your hired on a job would it be illegal to use an ITIN instead of your issued SSN?

You should not have both. The ITIN is just for use if there is some reason you cannot qualify for a social security number. Once you have a social security number the ITIN becomes null and void.

It is illegal to work with an ITIN. They are only used for tax reporting purposes. ITINs are issued by the IRS, not Social Security. You are suppose to have a valid SSN to have a job in the US. Even then, not all SSNs are valid for employment.

No, you CANNOT have both. If you have a SSN, you are not eligible for an ITIN. If you apply for one, it will be denied.

Right from the W-7 form:

Do not submit this form if you have, or are eligible to obtain, a U.S. social security number (SSN).

Once you have a SSN, you can not even apply for a ITIN.

Why would you want to?
