I am writing a huge paper for my government class in which I have to come up with a public school system reform that promotes diversity without busing, school of choice, vouchers, or charter schools. I also have to reform the curriculum to a nationwide standard....

In any event, I need to know how school taxes are collected district by district. Does it vary by state/local government/muncipality? Is it a progressive or flat rate tax?

Thanks

I live in North Carolina. The state has caught up w/ me & wants me to pay what's owed. If I had it I would. Can they garnish my wages? That'd be ok as long as it wasn't more than $300/month or so. I've tried looking for a lawyer but they're booked thru April. I know, it was stupid not to pay but what should I do now? I'd like to work out a payment plan but after my only conversation with them I'm told I have to pay it in 3 payments at most, I can't afford it. I'm a single parent of 2 kids so I'd really like to avoid jail.... what's your advise? I'd like to head over action by the IRS also.

I've been e-filing every year since it became available. I always got my direct deposited refund in 4 or 5 days. My ex e-filed and it took hers almost two weeks. I e-filed 4 days ago and was wondering if I have that long a wait also. Just trying to get some feedback from those who have e-filed with dd this year.

I am not sure how to report the shares that were bought with dividend money.

let's say I bought 10 shares of certain mutual fund for 10 dollars, and I received 20 dollars as dividends and automatically reinvested and bought 2 more shares, then I sold all 12 shares.

How should I report the 2 extra shares? I received 1099-div for the dividends and 1099-b for the transactions.

thanks

My husband's family owns a business and every year we have our taxes done by an accountant that is paid by the business. Everyone in the family goes on one particular day and meets with the accountants. The accountant is supposed to calculate our tax return based on who comes to meet with them first. Last year, my husband and I met with them first. We waited 6 weeks and still we had no idea what our return was going to be. We found out from my husband's siblings that everyone else knew what they were getting even though we were the first to meet with them. So my husband called the accountant's office and asked what happened. They kept telling us that it would take another week. So we waited another week. My husband called again wondering if the documents got lost in the mail. Apparently the accountant got angry at us for calling and thinks my husband was being rude.

My husband went to see these accountants again this year and blamed us for last year's problem.

A woman on the helpline told me today that the disregarded income for tax credits has risen from £2500 to £25000. Is this true and if it is when did it happen?

i am engaged to a man who has two other children from a previous relationship. its a very complicated situation, but he owes back child support. the child support is now automatically deducted from his paychecks each week and has been for years. for the past few years when he has filed, the refunds that he gets automatically go to the guardian of the children for the back child support that he owes. my question is what is the best way for us to file so that we can make sure to get the money that we should from our refund? i am a new mom, i had my baby in december of last year so i can claim her on my taxes, but we did not know if we should file jointly, separately, etc...if we file jointly, and we receive money back bc of the newborn, will this money automatically be taken and sent for his back child support? is it best that we file separately and i claim our baby so that we are guaranteed that money? i do not understand the tax process well and need some advice. thank you!

Here is the deal-- does anybody know how I should file taxes for my particular situation? I have worked in VA all 2006 but in Sept. I got married and moved to MD where my husband lives but kept my job. Since then I have paid MD taxes.
When my husband and I went to HR Block to file they were very confused by the situtation and did not know how to file.
When we tried to file joint married They said that I have not paid sufficient income tax for MD so I owe $1400!!! The thing is I was not living in MD all year to pay all those taxes I was paying taxes for VA. Also if it is done the other way around My husband owes alot of money to VA...but he never lived in VA!!!
Can someone help me or point me in the right direction? We tried to file seperatley but they tell us its the same deal. I have gone to the IRS website but found no help.
We are hoping to file jointly so I can use the hope scholarship credit.

The homes that are built on Extreme Make-over are beautiful. After everything is finished who pays the taxes on the house and the property taxes there after? The house is after all a gift to these deserving people.

I FILED MY TAXES ON FEBRUARY 8 AND THEY WERE ACCEPTED THAT DAT. THEN A FEW DAYS LATER I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING I OWED SOME TAXES FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR. I WAS COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THESE OWED TAXES AND HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY NOTICE UNTIL NOW. EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SMALL AMOUNT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE KNOWN EARLIER. WILL MY REFUND AMOUNT BE CHANGED MINUS THIS AMOUNT. OR CAN I DO THE PAYMENT PLAN. I HAD PLANS FOR THIS REFUND I WAS EXPECTING.
