My husband's family owns a business and every year we have our taxes done by an accountant that is paid by the business. Everyone in the family goes on one particular day and meets with the accountants. The accountant is supposed to calculate our tax return based on who comes to meet with them first. Last year, my husband and I met with them first. We waited 6 weeks and still we had no idea what our return was going to be. We found out from my husband's siblings that everyone else knew what they were getting even though we were the first to meet with them. So my husband called the accountant's office and asked what happened. They kept telling us that it would take another week. So we waited another week. My husband called again wondering if the documents got lost in the mail. Apparently the accountant got angry at us for calling and thinks my husband was being rude.

My husband went to see these accountants again this year and blamed us for last year's problem.

Shouldn't the accountants be the ones accommodating to us?

There can be a myriad of reasons why your return may have been delayed. That said, this is a service business and your accountant should always act professionally. You are paying them for a service, so they should be the one accomodating you. If the accountant is rude to you, you may want to consider looking for a new accountant.

Yes, your accountant SHOULD be following up with you.

While most of us are running around the office like mad, it is our partners' jobs to make sure everything runs smoothly with our clients. I.E., you are VERY important and your opinion is too!

My advise would be to assess where you are currently at with this accountant. The whole family might be in need of a change and there are PLENTY of qualified, happy to help CPA firms about. Communication is a must.

Yes, there are times when we accountants get overwhelmed and busy with the clock flying by faster than we'd like. But that NEVER qualifies as an excuse to be rude to someone, especially our clients.

Best of luck to you.

Since we don't have the complete story, it's not possible to make any comments.

It's completely possible that the accountant was missing documentation or information needed to complete your return. They would not delay someone else's return just because you walked through the door first.

He doesn't sound like a professional to me. Is he a CPA? If not, I would change to a CPA. CPAs have to follow rules of professional ethics and conduct, which I don't believe your accountant is following.

And you're still using this accountant? Why?

Yes they should, after all you are paying them and they work for you.
