When my wife changed her name with the Army (she is a medical student in the Health Professionals Scholarship Program who gets a monthly stipend), they had her state of residence as Kansas for one month. We corrected the error, but when he W-2 came they still had Kansas listed in section 15. How should we handle any taxes owed?

I have a small business and am looking to borrow funds for the business. The funds will mostly be invested in real estate or lent out to investors. An associate said that if the LLC took a loan from an individual, promised to pay a predertimened interest payment every month for a fixed period of time (1% a month for 3 years) and then used that money to invest in company assetts and or loan it out to individuals that this was a securities violation and a serious legal offense. Can anyone offer any insight? We are looking at borrowing from one person, 200K on terms discussed above.

I have a couple of non-retirement-plan Vanguard funds that I bought several years ago when I was 20 and knew very little about federal income tax law. I'd now like to use these non-retirement-plan funds to fund a new Vanguard IRA account with the same funds for tax years 2006 and 2007. Here are my questions:

1. I've received mixed signals from Vanguard about whether doing this would be considered a taxable event in the form of a "sale" that would incur capital gains taxes on any appreciation of the "sold" funds since purchasing them. I can't find anything specifically addressing this issue in the IRS's publications. It seem reasonable to me to view this transaction as basically the equivalent of a rollover, which I know is not taxed, and not a taxable event.

2. If I put one or both of my funds into an IRA for tax year 2006 now, can I defer tax on the portion of the earnings on the contributed fund(s) that would have been deferred had I made the contribution at the start of 2006?

Is there a program that can help her pay this or an exemption she can apply for? We are in Birmingham, Alabama. We are trying to find some help, but with the intrest it is climbing over $2,000. Any Ideas?

I pay child support to my ex husband for our three daughters. Due to his ever increasing greed of money I am not allowed to claim any of them on my taxes for EIC benefits. Am I still allowed to claim one of them for Child Tax Credit even though she lived with me less than half the year (as a non-dependent credit)? Will that affect his filing of his taxes claiming all three of them?

I just made a career change and am now an independent contractor. I've created an account in which I deposit 35% of my income for taxes, but I don't know how often to report, or even how to report my income. Anyone have helpful hints? Appreciate it!
