Back in September my husband received a letter saying he hadn't paid enough National Insurance Tax for 2004-2005. I then got the exact same letter today (which was dated 23rd December!) saying I hadn't paid the same amount for the same tax year.

Considering we both work full time I thought it was strange, but when I rang them they said, "Oh yes, there was some paperwork problems back then and we hope to resolve it in about 12 weeks so you might get a new letter saying you don't owe anything".

Has anyone else received this letter? Do you think it's a disgrace that even though they know there is a problem they are still telling people they haven't paid enough when they probably have?

I am disabled and recieves disability income. I write content for a pay to blog site, made just over $600 for the entire year. Since I made over 600, I had to fill out a form and they sent me a 1099- miscalaneous. Everyone says I have to report to IRS. The money was nice to get, but I really consider this a hobby. Do I need to file? Will I be in trouble for not reporting the $55 a month to Sociall Security? If I can file, can I claim the EIC credit since the money was non-employee compensation?
Thanks for the help.

I understand that you can deduct loss of property due to a casulty that was not covered by insurance, but does that include the deductible?
For example, I had a car fire. The insurance company determined the car was worth $4,000 and cut me a check for $3,000 because my deductible was $1,000. Can I deduct that $1,000 from my taxes? Can I count the cost I paid for a rental vehicle?

I looked up my property tax info on the SD Treasury Tax site and found out that I am deliquient on my first payment and owe about $1800. I purchased this condo in late July of 2006 and I remember that the seller said I didn't have to pay property taxes the first year. Is this true? I have also noticed that everyone in my complex are also Past Due for their property taxes too. Is this a problem?

My 77yo father with pretty serious medical issues is living with my husband and I. He pays 100.00 rent out of his SSA of 800.00. He has medical through the VA, so no extra medical costs . He uses the rest of his money to pay his internet, phone and vehicle insurance and his grandsons space rent (which is his old home before he moved in with us). I supply his home, furnishings, toiletries, meals and care. Can I claim him as a dependent. It costs me time and energy and $ to have him here but not sure if he is considered dependent. I have read the irs description but not sure if I provide more than 50% of his support.

I recevied a bonus last year and they taxed it before hand as bonuses should be taxed - that's what I was told. Now, I don't see this bonus amount indicated specially in any way on my W-2 - it looks as though it's been lumped into my total wages. Does that mean that the bonus taxation has be lumped into my federal income tax witheld?

Should I use the 1040 non-EZ to specially indicate the bonus? It was taxed at a very high rate and the controller told me at the time that it could be refigured at my filing time to take into account exemptions.

A little lost, can't afford an accountant.
