I bought Turbo Tax to do my 2005 tax return. I cannot locate the copies I made last year. I have no clue how to figure my AGI from last year. Will the IRS give this info over the phone, etc? This info is all I'm missing and I can e-file my 2006 return.

Yes the IRS can provide this information. They will first need to verify you idenitity, call 1-800-829-1040 Monday thru Friday from 7 am to 10pm. Once they verify your ideniitity they can pull your account up right then and provide the information that you need. You can also have them send you a transcript of the return for you to keep for your records free of charge. You would get this with in 7 to 10 days via a phone call or by using form 4506T, Or order an actual photo copy of the return filing in form 4506, this process can take approx. 60 days to process.

If you can't find the printout, just fire up TurboTax 2005 and have a look at the return or print out another copy.

If you no longer have the program and the data file, you'll have to apply to the IRS for a copy of your 2005 return. Because that information is used for various security purposes, they will not give that out over the phone.

Here's a link to the IRS FAQ on copies of returns or tax extracts. http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq1-6.html To get a tax extract you probably need to know the AGI so that probably won't help you. You'll most likely need to get a copy of the return. There is a $39.00 fee for that and they're not all that speedy about getting them out, it can take a few weeks.

Given the lead time that it takes the IRS to get you a copy of your 2005 return to you it might just be better to file a paper return and take the hit for the slower refund processing.
