Back in September my husband received a letter saying he hadn't paid enough National Insurance Tax for 2004-2005. I then got the exact same letter today (which was dated 23rd December!) saying I hadn't paid the same amount for the same tax year.

Considering we both work full time I thought it was strange, but when I rang them they said, "Oh yes, there was some paperwork problems back then and we hope to resolve it in about 12 weeks so you might get a new letter saying you don't owe anything".

Has anyone else received this letter? Do you think it's a disgrace that even though they know there is a problem they are still telling people they haven't paid enough when they probably have?

Thanks for your answer Lou, but hpw come a department so on the ball has taken nearly a month to post a letter?

And I did engage by brain, I do know that I paid all contributions for the tax year. The so called "on the ball" dept even told me they couldn't be sure the letter was correct.

Does exactley instil me with a lot of confidence I'm afraid.

Hi Shy

I haven't received a letter like that but be assured that this Dept. is on the ball. I knew exactly what NI conts I was missing for a particular year and I received a letter that exactly matched my calculations.

It isn't good enough, I know, but when the brain catches up with the mouth, I think you will find it in order.

Unlike the Child Support Agency, eh?

#URGENT EDIT#...I meant when THEIR BRAIN CATCHES UP....NOT YOURS. SO SORRY FOR THE MISUNDERSTANDING. SORRY FRIEND. OK?

Yes apparently I haven't paid enough NI contributions in 2003, I got this letter last year and I wrote back to the Inland Revenue a very nice letter explaining that I only earned £25.00 a week as a dinner lady and so I hadn't earned enough money, apparently I can make it up by not leaving work until I am 61 that was their reply, since the retirement age is going up anyway I am not initially worried.

Twice in the past two years I have been told I haven't made enough contributions-I have all my old payslips and P60, P45 forms going back 6 or 7 years to prove payment has been deducted from me, yet it still took months to sort out. It is best to keep these if possible as you have no other evidence you have paid them.
Incidentally I have just been working in Norway paying 33% Norwegian income tax and yet I still have to pay full N.I contributions here.Scandalous

It is very worrying - I received a similar one quite a few years ago saying that I needed to pay so much thousand pounds to them - when I rang them they said not to worry about it!!! Yeah right - too late when I thought I had been hit with a huge bill!
