My 77yo father with pretty serious medical issues is living with my husband and I. He pays 100.00 rent out of his SSA of 800.00. He has medical through the VA, so no extra medical costs . He uses the rest of his money to pay his internet, phone and vehicle insurance and his grandsons space rent (which is his old home before he moved in with us). I supply his home, furnishings, toiletries, meals and care. Can I claim him as a dependent. It costs me time and energy and $ to have him here but not sure if he is considered dependent. I have read the irs description but not sure if I provide more than 50% of his support.

Maybe. If his SS income is tax exempt, you can claim him as a dependent IF you can prove that you provided more than one-half of his support. See IRS Pub 501, here's a link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf and go to page 18 for a worksheet that will help you determine if you paid more than half of his support.

If he lives with you more than 50% of the time and you financially support him, then yes you can claim him as a dependent. To be sure... check with the IRS.

I believe you have to be his legal guardian or conservator- If he is still in charge of his own affairs, he's just a family member who is renting a spot in your house... Check with your accountant, I hope they say I'm wrong and you get the deduct...
