You should file if your income at or above the amount of your personal exemption (if you qualify to claim the exemption) and the amount of the standard deduction for your filing status and income. Even if your income is below this, you also need to look at your W2 statement to see if any Federal Tax was withheld. You may not have a requirement to file a return, but would want to file to get any refund of taxed that you paid in.

If you are Single and made more than $8450, you have to file. If you are Married Filing Jointly the limit is $16900. Married Filing Separately the limited is $3300. Head of Household is $10850. If you are 65 or older, then add $1250 to the limit.

Even if you are not required to file and you worked (and thus have tax withheld), you can still file and get the money back. Plus if you had telephone, cell phone or phone card service any time after March 2003, you will get $30 - $60 one time telephone tax refund.

Best wishes.

If you earned money from any source, and your total income exceeds the sum of the standard deduction for your filing status, plus the personal exemptions you are entitled to, you are required to file a tax return.
