Bank of america is very stealthy in charging overdraft fees. For instance, my account had a certain amount of money, I went and used my debit account for several different transactions. I log in this morning and found 6 negative transactions. Why? Because Bank of America cashed a check I wrote several days prior, that day but never bother to display this as being cashed in my online account, overdrawing it. So I now I owe $35 several times over for small charges as low as $.95! This is very deceptive. How can I avoid paying these ridiculous fees? I am not rich and cannot afford to have thousands sitting in my account. Any banks with lower fees and less deceptive practices than bank of america?

Is there anything you can do if you try to use a gift card that should have a $40 balance on it, but Circuit City says there is nothing on it. It was a x-mas gift and I know for a fact that it has not been used. The scratch-away strip is still intact on the back. We are not sure if we will be able to find a receipt.

I received a check in the mail for $2100.00. I have called the bank and the account is valid and as far as I can tell the check is real. I really could use the money, and want to cash the check. What is the worst thing that could happen if this is a scam? Has anyone else received a check for contest winnings and cashed it?

I am talking about all one card. Assuming one has the credit limit to do so. Say, one has a $5,000 C.C. debt with a %12 APR and a $15,000 credit limit and they are given purchase checks with a fixed 7% APR (which many c.c. companys do). I know they forbid you from using those to pay balances from the same company that issued them, but why not just use one of those purchase checks to write $5,000 cash to yourself, put that money in your checking account. Then, write a regular check to pay off that higher $5,000 APR on your credit card so that you are left with $5,000 debt at 7% rather than $5000 debt at 12%

Right now I have a 10K debt on one of my C.C. and it has a high interest rate, but if I am able to get a 10K loan dollars to pay off the entire amount and then use a C.C. purchase check from that same card (but this time with a much lower interest rate) to pay off the loan in a week or less I will be in better shape. One side note is that the local bank that I will be asking the loan from is also the same bank that owns the C.C. Do you think this idea will work. I have a lot of student loan debt in addition to this C.C. although my credit rating is pretty good. I feel something like this is my only option because I don't see my income getting that big in the near future and I can only afford to make the min. payment which is getting me nowhere. A debt counseling agency will only help me if I get rid of the card, which is my only source of emergency funds. Also, I am unable to get another lower interest rate C.C.to transfer to $ to because of the my high debt to income ratio

Is it bad to have more than one or two bank accounts? I don't even know what inspired this question to be honest. But I was just thinking about how I personally have 5 accounts with 5 different banks. Then in addition to that I have a Roth IRA with Schwab, and one with Fidelity, and another account with Scottrade for my discretionary fund. Then lastly I have my 401(k) So all totaled that is 9 different accounts. Is that too much? I have no credit cards, no debt or anything, just 9 different accounts, with 9 different institutions. For some reason that just seems a little excessive. Or maybe it isn't. Whatever, any thoughts?
