It's a long story, but in short I traveled outside of US and I didn't want to carry cash with me so I wrote a cashier check to myself. When I arrived I realized that canceling the check was a better choice.

I contacted my younger brother in US, whose name is on my account too, and I told him to cancel the check, they asked me to send the original check so I sent it with Fedex Priority mail.

Now get this; Fedex LOST THE PACKAGE! and it's been two weeks and they say nothing can be done, I only have to wait to see if they find it that's all. (it wasn't insured because it's a document)

Now the bank says that if I have the check number I can cancel the check but I'll have to wait 90 days until I get my money back into my account!

Is there any way to cancel the check without waiting 90 days?!

Is there any better approach to solve this problem? unfortunately I'm not in US and I don't expect to be back for at least a year :(

any help is greatly appreciated!

Just wanted to know if you had more than $100,000 in the bank in either your checking or savings account, more than $100,000 is not covered if something happens? What are you supposed to do if you have more than $100,000? Put it in different banks? What do celebrities who get paid millions do with their money? Do they invest it all? Just a silly question, but was in line in bank and didn't quite understand it. Thanks!

I am going to try to break the drama down as shortly as possible. My husband has a 401k and he is 100% vested in a plan that allows loans. In April we filled out a loan application and he was told "no: by the owner because the owner felt he was looking for a new job. We filled out another loan application on July 9th. During these 22 days we have been told that he can get the loan but they will turn over the paperwork when they feel like it, he was also told if he asked about the loan or anyone on his behalf asked about it he would be terminated, today the 401k holding company called my husbands employers asking why they didn't recieve the proper forms and telling them they couldn't hold funds. My husbands employer was so mad that he got this call he told my husband to start looking for a new job while screaming and swearing at my husband...Legally, where do we stand? This all seems very shady and illegal to me, any advice would help.

We are in the process of closing on our first house and don't want to mess this up. My husband is being forced to file bankruptcy soon on ONLY medical bills. I don't know if the bankruptcy should be filed just after closing to prevent a lawsuit from one of the creditors or if we should just go to court and settle the bankruptcy after a judgment has been passed. If we filed chapter 13 bankruptcy, what kind of percentage of the total bills do you usually have to pay on medical bills; or does it depend on your income and expenses? Help please! Also, will our credit cards (which we do NOT have a problem with) be taken away from us?

20 k in cc debt. never late for a payment and no derogatory items in my report. but i have 6 cc's and everything I am paying is going to interest and my debt doesn't go down. my credit score is very low (around 630) even thogh my payment history is perfect. Shall I apply to those services where they negotiate your debt with the cc companies? I heard that doing that also reduces your credit score. What is the best way to get rid of this debt as quick as possible?

I already have a Chase credit card, but they keep sending me this offer for a Chase Business Card, and it has a better APR. I don't operate a business. Can I still sign up for this "business" card and transfer my balance from my current Chase card to this one?

I asked this question last night but I figured I'd ask when more people were awake.

I'm subletting a shared room in a townhouse in DC. Change of plans and I'm leaving almost a month early. I signed a sublease agreement so I can see where the problem is, but I paid through August 31. I wouldn't have a problem if she was actually going to be gone and it would be my place until August 31. But she's moving all her stuff back in on August 16th. Since I won't be there and she will it's like I'd be paying for half a month of her rent.

1 month's worth of rent here is worth 3 months worth of rent back home. It would help a lot to get even two days of the money back. She doesn't have to pay any bills with it because the landlord pays all the bills (except cable, which I already paid her separately.)

Do you think I'm right for asking for my money back or should I suck it up since I already signed something? Should I find a person to sublet from me if she won't pay me anything back?

okay, so i've been a renter out in the country for a while now, and also childless... well, my husband & i made an offer on a house that's in the city and found out we were going to have a baby in the same week! eep!!

i'm making a budget (particularly for the 12 week leave i will need to take when the baby comes) but i'm not sure what to include... here's what i got so far.

~electricity (not sure how much it will be?? do rates vary a lot within a similar region?)
~cell phone (no land line)
~water & sewer (absolutely NO CLUE! never had to pay before)
~mortgage (PITI, TBD)
~credit card bills ($200/month)
~car insurance (<$75/month)
~OB payments (next 7 months $170/month; hospital bills following)
~doctor copays (?$50/month? 2 visits for a while)
~prescriptions ($40/month)
~diapers ($???)
~groceries ($200)
~gas ($100? it will go down from what it is now, our commute will be about 1/3 of what it is currently)
~garbage ($20/month?)

anything else you can think of? thnx

everyone that I talk to asks for a deposit upfront, there is no doubt that that is a scam.. Lenders don't charge money up front.. has anyone ever received any money from one of these lenders, or are they all scams? looking for one that doesn't have any up front fees or requesting money from me..
