Is there anything you can do if you try to use a gift card that should have a $40 balance on it, but Circuit City says there is nothing on it. It was a x-mas gift and I know for a fact that it has not been used. The scratch-away strip is still intact on the back. We are not sure if we will be able to find a receipt.

Many gift cards have a shelf life; i.e. they lose value the longer they are not used. Usually neither the purchaser nor the recipient is aware of this.

You should always ask about the card's shelf life when buying one.

If you visit a store, customer service should be able to check when the gift card was used. Here's a link to the CC gift card terms http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/cat/-13318/edOid/105472/rpem/ccd/lookLearn.do
. Their cards do not have fees and they do not expire. But if you have a merchendise card (which is not a gift card) then it expires in 90 days.

Good luck!

If it was purchased from one of those open counters, it may have been stolen and used.

A scam is around where one captures the the card number and the amount, then uses the activation code. Then use it online.

It sounds like maybe the card was never activated when purchased or possibly stolen (therefore not activated)
