I just graduated in December 2006 from the University of Kentucky. My degree is in Psychology, but I have a passion for financial analysis and business developement. I was involved with a wonderful small business throughout college in which I was able to manage all of the financial/customer/business data and use it to help grow the company (a lot.)

However, now that I am out of college and want to move into a sustainable career (i.e. support my family with pay and benefits,) I am finding it difficult to pursue my passion. My wife and I want to move to the Central Florida area (where we were engaged, honeymooned, etc.) I have applied for dozens of analyst jobs down there, but, as of yet, no bite. How does one "break into" this field?

Last year (my first year in the organization) I have been awarded an 8% salary increase. This year it is only 5 %. At the same time I receive more commissions now because I have more of my projects developed. What that decrease in the salary increase could mean? Could that indicate that I am not considered a important employee as I used to be considered last year. Shall I discuss this with my manager

I recently went in for an interview with AIG (American International Group) about premier auditing position. They said if I get hired, I would have to go through 3 months of training and start working from home from that point on with company laptop and do a lot of traveling for audit.
I can accept doing a lot of travel for audit. But working from home by myself? I have always been working and wanting to work in company setting with a lot of people.
I am just out of university with business degree and my goal is to become a CPA, and work in public accounting and/or government agencies.
Should I definitely reject this job if I get the job offer? I just have hard time imagining myself working at home instead of office with a group of people.
Thanks in advance for any valuable insights and advice.

I spent 3 months studying for and passing my series 3 license for a sales position in a firm. I live in an area that has no firms and in order for me to work i have to move. I called upon many companies that are about 3 hours away, and told them up front that I will need 2000 upfront to work so i can pay for my first one living expense. The job is commission only. A few companies agreed on loaning me 2k but then retracted! Why is 2k in relocation costs so much money, even though i offered to pay it back after i made some deals and sign a contract. How should i approach asking for relocation assistance with an employer?

TO me its well justified, because these employers will pay for your testing which comes out to 800 dollars, and the period is a 3 months period.

Well i paid the 800 out of pocket, and i am ready to go immediately. So isnt it worth 2000 to have someone starting now, then traing a new person and waiting 3 months?

your perspective to help me understand?

Ok I am getting really nervous now! especialy since no one anwered my last question.... thinking maybe no one saw it...

So, the interview I had Friday went really well, they called me back an hour after I had left and said they were going to come up with a compensation package for me and would get back to me either Friday or today.

So there is 2.5 hours left in the work day..... They have not called?? Should I be patient? Or should I call them? and if so what should I say?

It's been five years since I graduated from college and I am at a major junction. I thought I had a passion for high end B2B corporate sales and for the past five years I truly did. I've made great money ($250k/yr at only 25!) and yet I feel like I am at a ceiling in where sales as a field can take me. I work for a MAJOR Fortune 500 IT Company and sell to CIO's, CEO's and so I am no slouch in the experience department. I really want to get into financial services but either I have to climb the ladder from the bottom & get paid crap or I need an Ivy League education to get paid well to begin with or to even get my foot in the door at all. I can't parlay my W2 at all in that field and my job experience almost holds no relevance when applying to those type of jobs. I would love to get in and work for a small hedge fund, private equity group, trading firm, IB, etc. and I know I have the analytical mind and a love of Wall Street to be a hit. Any suggestions on what I should do?

I am an MBA graduate with 7 years of experience in corporate finance and accounting at large corporations in US and Canada. Good work ethics, good reputation and good at what I do. I am thinking about joining one of the Big 4 as a business consultant in Canada, but I don't really want to pursue any of the accounting certifications (CA, CGA etc). Is this going to limit my career growth in a major firm regardless how well I perform as a consultant? Will I be pressured into getting the certifications?

I especially appreciate answers from people employed in the Big 4.

I went for 5 interviews meeting VP's, EVP's, Presidents, HR & the hiring manager and was offered the job, on paper. One issue which had been discussed with an EVP & HR was rather than a discretionary bonus, as national sales director a bonus based on asset growth is more aligned with their objectives & my preference. It was received positively & with enthusiasm. It seems they have changed their mind as far as I can tell as no one is phoning me back. Over the last 10 days I've contacted HR & the hiring manager with polite follow up messages - no replies. My references are pristine and include a bank president. They had a third party agency call to check - odd judgement call - but worse, my references felt they were uninformed & unengaged. The bank president gave a glowing recommend nevertheless. Clearly another candidate has appeared, cheaper & possibly better - I wish the best to the company & hope they get both...but this seems rude to me, is this standard hiring practice?

I live in the UK.On Friday I knocked over a cup of black tea at my desk and badly scalded my arm. I have been signed off work for two weeks by a hospital burns unit. I won't lose any salary and a colleague has suggested I file a compensation claim. As I am half way through a 12 month contract and hoping to have torenewed, would I be stupid to try and sue the company.
