In the US, the term "background check" usually refers to a search for criminal convictions. We run background checks at my employment agency, and that's what it involves: criminal records.
Now sometimes we do "reference checks", sometimes calling the people listed as references on the application, and sometimes just calling previous employers. That phone call might result in our finding out that you got fired. If they tell us. And then if we did find out, it may or may not prevent us from placing you.

I'm a manager for wetseal and if we contact your previous employer the only information we can find out from them is when you started and when your end date was. But they will never provide information in regards to why you were fired or let go.

No not from a background check. That is basically checking for a criminal record. They only way they know if if you use them for reference or if they call them to check on employment.

Yes, if you put down on the application your former employer. They can call even if you tell them not to call, just to check if you worked there.
If you don't want someone to know you was fire in the past don't put your former employer down on the application. Don't use them as a source of work history. If you don't put it down and they find out, tell them your cousin used your social security and blame her, lol.
