I'm a student at a college and I'm worried if I deposit an extra 100$ or 300$ that say my grandparents give me, into my checking account, they will count that as a source of income for tax purposes. I get a little financial aid and would like to keep it.

OK, here's the scoop.. I recently purchased a $1700 TV from a national retailer. I paid $1500 of the amount using their store issued credit card and the remaining $200 using my personal credit card. I wasn't happy with the picture once I had it home for a few days so I returned it for a refund.

I wasn't aware of this at the time, but the customer service person who handled the return made a mistake and credited the full $1700 to my personal credit card. It was a few weeks later that I realized the mistake.. I went back to the store and talked with the manager and she said they would have to charge my credit card $1500 dollars in order to pay off the credit balance on the store card. Now, I have a $1500 debit showing up on my personal credit card bill! Does this seem right? I'm fairly new to credit cards so I'm very confused about how all of this works. Does anyone have any explanations or any suggestions or on how to get out of this mess? Thanks in advance!

On $60K p/y, I fully fund my 403b @$15,500 and a roth at $4k (will increase to $5k/2008). I have $16K in mm account as emergency fund, no credit card bills, single/no children. I could still invest $1-$3K per year, am I eligible to fully fund a traditional ira? If not, any suggestions for the $1-$3K?

Hi
I am moving out of my current apartment for which i paid $700 deposit when i first started living there. I dont see anything in the lease that says the $250 will be taken out of my deposit for painting and carpet cleaning when i leave.
Now, the manager tells me that it will cost $250 from my deposit to get those done.
However, I did smoke in the apartment and he could probably tell and he would charge me painting coz the walls might be slightly yellow from the smoke.
Also, there are tiny stains on the carpet, but just regular wear and tear.
I dont have the time or money to take him to small claims, and it will probably cost me more to take him to small claims.
What do you guys recommend?

I am a 27 year old male. I have been working full time for a nonprofit making $33k a year. I am also half way to getting my bachelors. During the past couple of years I have been going part time to school which has worked out ok. I am getting to the point now where it is becoming more and more difficult to get classes that work with my schedule. So I am considering quitting my job at the end of this year so I can give my all to finishing school. Financially, I have $30k in savings, my billls are very low. . I also make a few hundred bucks a month selling on ebay on the side which pays my bills and allows me to not use any of my savings, I don't pay rent cause I do snow removal and grass cutting for my building. My job would not allow me to go to part time. I am a very smart person but in the past have made some bad choices when it comes to school work etc. I am going for a degree in finance & accounting. What should I do?

I am starting a non profit online magazine for women.
I am not charging readers to view the magazine and I want to put
advertisements in my magazine for companies like Lancome, Clinique, Steve Madden shoe ads, beauty products etc.
I will put in the current ads and I am not charging anyone to advertise either.
I wanted to know if I put a clause in my site that says the advertisers are in no way affiliated with my mag or the views the mag expresses. Do you think companies will be mad or appreciate the free advertising?

I am on a budget, successfully last two years. Before then, we racked up nearly $9000 total in credit card debt on five cards. (home repairs, stuff). We have paid our credit cards on time, and have NO credit cards now. My problem, I am aggravated. Before my budget, I was late paying on two cards , and all cards jacked my rates to nearly 30%. So, even paying on time the last two years, the companies still deem me 'risky' since I only pay minumum. I still owe $9000!! I asked for a payoff amount, since half of what is owed is interest and penelties. They all say no, nor will they reduce the interest rate. (heck, they have a gold mine with me!) Anyone have luck with a letter asking creditors to take a lower payoff amount ?? I am caring for an ill son so i can't work, and my husband's job cut back so we are getting half of what we were earning. I don't want to do debt consolidation, since they tend to be a scam. If I can't negotiate a lower payoff amount, how can they?

I have several credit cards and cannot pay the minimum balance always, with this being said is there anyway to get the companies to shut off my credit cards so that the interest does not keep taking on or some way that the charge me a set amount each month that the account still has an account but the minimum and interest do not continue to rise?

A few days ago I got a call from a bank asking me if I wanted a new credit card. I told them very clearly that I didn't want to do anything that day, but if they wanted to send me some information I'd happily look over it.
They went ahead and opened an account in my name and sent me the card. I can, of course, cancel the card but the opening/closing will still have a negative effect on my credit report.
They haven't stolen from me, no one is using my card, but they still did something without my authorization that will have a negative effect on my credit. I figure if they've committed a crime that I can name I can make a lot more progress with customer service. Is this credit card fraud? Is this illegal? If so, what exactly is the crime? What can I do with the company, and what can I do if they're not helpful?
Thanks.

I am out of work, we had a family emergency (son became gravely ill and hospitalized for 3 months), and during that time we had to resign our lease. We signed just out of sheer pressure, since we had no way to move out. We had no idea if our son was going to live or not, and if he did he would need extended home care after he left the hospital. We were trying to keep our place, while staying out-of-town to be near our son. The rent was raised, and I lost my job, my husband is only getting part-time work. I can't work, I am caring for my son. We didn't pay this months rent, and we have been asked to vacate the premises or face eviction. Since they asked us to leave, will we be considered breaking our lease? will we be held responsible for the remaining 9 months of rent ?

My husbands Xmas bonus was taxed at 39% because they called him an hourly employee (he's not, he's salary and always has been) with the bonus being lined as a 1 hour earning for $2500. They took $981 for taxes. Is this right? Doesn't the bonus get taxed as a salary earning?

My husband needs to go to law school! He made perfect 36 on ACT, 1410 on SAT, and is a certifiable MENSA genius. The problem? We cannot afford for him to go to school! He is 26, a restaurant general manager, and the main breadwinner of the home. Where can we go to find financial aid? All of the scholarships and stuff are for high school students, and we cannot afford loans right now (we have three preschoolers). Is there someone that can help? Somewhere we can go that will trade tuition costs for a contract of employment, anything will help! We are desperate. He has so much potential that is being wasted!
