I am 16 yrs old and I work at a restaurant. Last week my boss payed me with a check and took out 7.65% from taxes. This week i wrote down the original amount in the book and divided it by 7.65 and got the amound he should have payed me.

BUT the amount I got was in cash, not check. He said i do not like to write checks but you still will get this money back on your taxes.

Is he right??

I am working on getting my very first apartment! I'm very excited but I don't really know the basics of what I should be asking. I have heard horror stories about hidden charges, fine print, etc..

What I'd like to know is what kind of questions should I be asking when I look at an apartment and what should I be looking for (like what are warning signs or what should be there that might not be)? I'd really appreciate any help you can give me!

I paid taxes and homeowners fees for 15 years. There are no buildings on the land. Also had to pay for an electrical hookup, although no electrical equipment was installed.

My parents are in the process of re-locating (due to my father's retirement) from Illinois to the suburbs of Dallas. They're strongly considering Arlington, Grand Prairie, Ft. Worth and Plano, but they can't get over how inexpensive the homes are and we're all curious to know if the low prices are indicative of something greater. Just the other day, for instance, they were looking at beautiful, new 3,500 square ft. homes for only $280,000, while in illinois they would probably be paying two-three times that much.

My two questions are: why is housing so affordable in these areas and is there anything important my parents should know about these locations (dangerous power plants, bad air, high crime rates, etc) ?

Thanks!

I own my own business out of the house. What I do is custom lettering. I do window logos and hours for company's. I put band logos on bass heads for bands. I make corner signs for business's. I have some promoters now and they have been asking me for business cards to get my name out there. But I dont want to print any cards until I have a name for my company. And I am trying to get a name thats appealing to both a teenage band and a grown professional business owner. So basically i need something edgey but professional. If you would like anymore information just ask. I want to avoid using my last name because its hard for people to pronounce at times. And my town name and street names are too boring to use.

I just started a job at Hungry Jacks two days ago part-time as a crew member, but then decided I absolutely hated it and quit without any notice. i.e simply didn't turn up the next day & unplugged phone. The reason for not giving notice is simply this: the manager was a total jerk and would have abused me had I told him I wanted to resign. I plan on mailing back the uniform and sending in a letter of resignation at some stage if I don't officially get fired before then (not that I care in the slightest). My question is (excuse my stupidity): can they sue me or something for not turning up to the work without any notice? I really don't care about the pay or anything else, I just quite simply DO NOT want to ever see or hear about that place again. I'm trying to pretend I was never employed there, even for a very short amount of time.

Leaving aside how unethical it was to quit without informing them, could there be any legal ramifications?

I have been actively looking for a job since I was let go from my previous job last year due to office restructuring. I cannot find anything I started applying for employment the day after I was let go. I really want to work again. I have faxed my resume, emailed and mailed my resume to companies hoping they might need help. I have answered job ads in the paper and also online on all the major employment web sites where my resume is posted. I have worked in a office for over twenty years my last position was almost seven years. I am also over 50 and i am wondering if my age comes into play. It is really getting frustrating I am on the computer for hours every night looking for a job. I am also signed up with a number of employment agencies I call them every couple of weeks and they keep telling me they have nothing for me. I have applied for many jobs and had only a couple of interviews this past year. I even applied for a couple of temp jobs and I was not called. What should I do.

I would really like to be a nurse, but I have heard horror stories of how female dominated health profession are chock full of gossip. In fact, I used to work at a large vet hospital, where there was only one other guy besides me, and I ended up quitting because the gossipping was so bad.

Will I endure this too as a nurse? I'll have a family by then, so I'm guessing that will help a lot. Still, I can't stand gossip.

Single. Have checked. I will get only about $300 due to spotty, low income, and often under- the-table, work history. Hypothetically, if I could show self-employed earnings of $20,000 per year for the remaining years before retirement, could I increase benefit amount significantly? And, another idea--how many years back may I file if it is beneficial?

P. S. How much can you make before you must file taxes? I think I have made too little, but maybe not.

Thank you for your help. It is time this ostrich raised her head.

We bought a home 5 years ago and we are trying to sell it. We recently discovered that the loan we were given wasn't a mortgage, and the back of the loan says that "collateral not to be used as primary residence". That's confusing, we live in a manufactured home in a trailer park, is this standard procedure, we are upset because this means our loan is now not assumable, and it's really hard to find a buyer. Does anybody know if this is normal, or was I suckered into the wrong type of loan? Can I get in trouble for this, and will this affect selling my home?

I'm a university student and my only income for 2007 was volunteering in a medical study. I was paid a few thousand dollars for being in this study, and no taxes were taken out of the payment I received. It will be reported on a 1099 form, for miscellaneous income, by the organization that conducted the study.

Since that's my only source of income for the year, I'll be way under the $8,450 minimum federal filing limit.

Do I not have to file a federal tax return, since I'm under the minimum limit? Or because it's on a 1099 and not a W-2, do I have to file even though I'm under?

Thanks!
