They do in a few states, the ones where they have a physical presence like offices or warehouses. Companies don't charge sales tax in stores where they don't have some sort of facility. Since for example Barnes and Noble has stores almost everywhere, they charge tax in all or almost all states.

They don't have physical stores in states like Best Buy... and so far there is no mandated internet tax.

FYI you're supposed to declare on your state taxes (varies on state) that you didn't pay state sales tax on items coming from other states.
