We accepted an offer to purchase our condo. The buyer has still not secured financing and we are now paying the mortgage on two homes. How can we force the buyer to honor the contract and continue the purchase and to what extent can we recover out of pocket costs? Frankly, this whole transaction has ruined all of the excitement of moving into a new place and has certainly stressed out my wife. I think that pain and suffering are legitimate damages in this instance. By the way, this was not a "by owner" transaction.

I have a State job, and I'm at the end of a year-long probationary period. During my first 2 months of employment, I had 3 instances of petty misconduct (attending an out-of-office meeting w/o accompaniment, playing a sudoku puzzle on MS Excel, and coming back late from lunch). I was counseled on these incidents but was not terminated. At the end of the standard 6-month probationary period, they elected to extend the probation period, rather than give me permanent status or terminate me. Since then, I've had no incidents of misconduct, but I've heard rumblings that my boss is concerned I may simply not be a good fit for the job and may not receive the appointment.

If I'm terminated due to failing a working test period, could they successfully argue that I'm not entitled to unemployment due to incidents of misconduct that took place over 8 months ago? Or would they have to prove my termination was immediately precipitated by misconduct?

Thanks!

I rec'd the check, called Amex to verify that it was legit, cashed it and it cleared. My question is do I need to claim this as income on my taxes? I am a housewife, so not currently employed outside the home and my husband and I file jointly.
Amex was not very helpful. They just said that the check was
a refund of interest and fees and to check with my tax person.

Has anyone else had problems with the British Gas Winter Rebate? My Mother and Grandmother are still both waiting for rebates from January. Having telephoned 0845 601 2006 they have been put on hold for an hour, then having no real answers for why British Gas are holding back the cash thus making a bucket load of interest. Can anyone relate with this and offer any ideas? The customer service team which I believe is abroad have no idea what the rebate scheme offers and its an ever going circle with no real answers.
Its disgusting how British Gas treat their customers who are obviously elderly who need the extra help during the winter. After enquiring as to how to write to the people at the above telephone number, British Gas have claimed that there is no postal address.

Existing home cost $200,000, selling for $240,000 18 months later, buying another home for $265,000. Do they owe capital gains taxes on the $40,000 increase in value? Also, they are taking $19,000 from the proceeds of the sale to pay off their car loan, so in essence they are putting $21,000 down and financing $244,000 - not that that should matter.

I have a lower credit score that I am trying to build up. I just had my mom add me as a authorized user on one of her credit cards. Would it raise my score to have another person or 2 add me also, or would it look like too much on my record? Would it up my score even more though if I get more added? (They have excellant credit)

One job my daughter is interested in is becoming a lawyer and rather than working at an ice cream parlour we were wanting to see if anyone knew if law offices ever hired teens for summer employment. Honestly I don't care where she works, but we just wanted to check out all the options.

Thank you!

I'm not talking calling references, I mean doing the formal background check that they do with the background check company to see your real work history.

I know that you have to agree with it and sign off for it, but how often do they actually follow through on it? Or, because it's retail do they really not care about it? If they are really desperate for workers, will they just skip that step?

Who is more likely to do it, small stores or big stores?

Hi,

I am about to purchase a VTX cruiser that i found on craigslist. I have met the seller in person and test driven the motorcycle. After deciding to purchase his, it turns out he is still paying off the finance company for it and therefore he does not have the authority to sell it.

his proposed method (which he supposedly discussed w/ the finance company) is:

he faxes them a bill of sale

I use western union quick collect to pay the finance company

they fax me a copy of the title and put the original in overnight mail to my home

the seller delivers the motorcycle to me

I am about to spend a LOT of money, so I was wondering if I should be worried about this. Is this commonly done? Is it safe? What can i do to protect myself?

Is there a better way? Thanks for any help!
