I am going to work at this nursing home entering bills into a computer, do some shreding - maybe in the basement, and mop the floors. i got 6.50 last yearv b/c that is what i asked for and i only turned 16, the legal age to work. This year I want to ask for 8.50 is that too high, or should I go with 7.75 or 7.50? thanx

He who mentions a number first loses! Research the issue, find out the average wage in your state for this work (go to your state's labor Department web site). If they ask "How much were you looking for?" I would reply "I am a hard worker with an established work record. I believe I have earned a wage somewhat higher than the entry level pay."

If they say "We normally start people at $7.50 and hour." Reply with the same statement above but add I think $7.75 would be a fair starting wage."

If this is the same place you worked for last year for $6.50, asking $8.50 this year might be a little high unless your state has a minimum wage that's over $7 or so.

Always ask for more than you really want. Why not ask for $9? They may come back with a counter offer for $8. Just let them know you're looking for $9 and tell them that you're flexible. If they like you, they will offer you the job at whatever they want to pay. Good luck!

Always better to ask high. If they cant do it then they will tell you. Worst they can do is tell you no to the 8.50 and make a counter offer.

It might be worth seeing if the company offer you a set wage first. Then, if it's too low, you can negotiate a better offer.
