i'm a single mom, my daughter is in my native land. i live here in US alone, i don't have any dependent here, i don't have a house. i worked a lot last year, making my gross high. i send most of my money to my daughter & family. when i file income tax, i wonder if i can claim my daughter as my dependent even if she's not here & even if she doesnt have social security number. i do have proofs of remittances. and my daughter's documents.

I made 7 trades in 06 and am filling out a D-1. Just to make sure I am getting this right: Column d is the Sale price? (the total amount received upon executing the sale) Column e is the Price I paid for when buying, right? If e is $100 and d is $80...then my LOSS will be reported on column F, right?

*note my short term gain is $2,000*

Now, what doesn't make sense is the form D-1 is asking me to add all the amounts from Column d, which comes to $14,000 and then to combine the amounts in column f, which is my gain of $2000...making Part 1 of Sched. D, line3 $16,000...Why do they want the Sales price totals???

My main goal is to offset the short term gain of $2000 with my single-transaction, Long term Loss of $5000...making the loss of $3000 for the year.

It is just scary to see such a high amount for column D without showing for column e.

Is this right?

This might seem like a stupid question but I am just wondering what kind of paper are pay stubs printed on, I'm bored to death right now folks and I was looking at my pay stub when it hit me, either way I was thinking of opening up an accounting office in my area once I finish College.

I am really good in physics and math and i want my career to use physics and math principles to do whatever it is that career does. I need help choosing so these are the ones i was thinking of:

Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Architect
Computer Software Engineer

Basically I KNOW that i want to be some sort of engineer/architect but i don't know what field of engineering to get into. But i have problems with each of the careers i listed:

Electrical Engineer: Mom says i won't like it because its working with things like power lines etc (I would like to build electronics so i thought this might be a good choice)

Mechanical: I don't want to work with cars and motors and things like that but i do want to build stuff or something that applies physics principles.

Architect: THE ONLY THING i can think about why i can't/shouldn't do this is that i can't draw, i mean if i had a ruler/protractor i'm sure i could draw buildings but i can't draw like an artist.

Everyone says "go to college, get an education" and I did that. Now I have graduated and have a bachelors in political science and don't know what to do. I did not really "excel" in anything, I just got the degree with a 3.0 GPA in four years and unfortunately made no worthwhile connections.

All I DO know is that I do not want to be working in a cubicle chained to a desk. Any ideas?

Does it bother you when a ceo makes $100 MM for doing a terrible job? Or when a company is in trouble, management asks workers to take cuts while at the same time doubling their own pay package.

I own two houses in two different states. One house I've owned for almost three years but have rented it for the last year. I didn't claim it as a rental last year, but if I don't sell it soon I guess I have to claim it as a rental. Do I have to pay capital gains on a rental property even though I've owned it over 2 years? Also, we've lived in our house now for almost a year and therefore didn't claim it last year. My wife and I combined probably make less than 20 thousand/year. How much capital gains will we pay in this lower tax bracket? Also, is it legal and also advisable to take out a 2nd mortgage to decrease the net gain to pay less capital gains? Is that possible? Someone told me to pay off everything we could with that 2nd mortgage to be less targetted by auditors. Does this sound reasonable? Any help soon would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently a student, getting ready to file taxes. My mother does not have any income (besides SSI). I work a job while going to school and during the summer and I have helped her with many of her bills. A freind of mine told me that I am able to claim her as a dependent. Is this correct? And if so is this any in partciular that I would have to fill out, etc.?

I've seen this term on several properties, but there is no explanation. Is this good to see if I'm a buyer? Does this mean that the seller is motivated?

When looking at clothes or whatever, you see the min. bid for .99. It stays low until the time to close gets close and, boom, the price goes up as much as $10.00 over night. This happens so much and it is not supposed to.Is that not considered fraud? It would be so easy for the seller to have others place higher bids on items so they will make you bid more. Is there a way to, without contacting E-Bay, to find out if the sellers are misleading customers?

Recently I was hired as a Full-time Kennel Technician and I get paid salary $300 a week. Last Thursday it snowed and nobody showed up at work except the doctor, the receptionist, and of course me. I usually get my kennels done and I leave for the afternoon and come back around 5 pm to do the kennels again. Well Thursday, I helped the doctor and acted as a Vet. Assistant and assisted the doctor all day because there was NO ONE else there, and I still had to do my kennels. I did every thing that a vet. assistant does when they are there but they did not pay me for helping the doctor that day. They've done this before when I helped with a emergnecy c-section on a dog. I dont feel that it is right because I'm not being paid for a Vet. Assistant and I know they make more then me. Do you think they are using me?
