There are qualifying questions you must answer to take either the earned income credit or the head of household deduction. Please read the IRS faq.s given here.

Call the IRS for help in this matter. But I think if she lived with you more than 6 months out of the year, and you supported her more than 50 percent of any one else, you can claim her as a dependent, and if you file head of household you would be able to also-BUT no one else can claim her as a dependent.

If she earned less than $3300, and lived with you all year, and you provided more than 50% of her support, you most certainly can claim her as a dependent.

You could only file with the Head of Household status if your granddaughter is considered your foster child (and it sounds like it for tax purposes) AND was a full-time student for at least 5 months of the year.

If she was not a student, you just file as single, and claim her as a dependent.

If she lived with you at least half of the year, and neither of her parents qualifies to claim her, then you can claim her as a qualifying child, and might be able to get EIC because of her.

i'm no expert by any means.

Is she still in school?
You may be able to claim status head of household (provided you are single), otherwise, I don't think you get to claim her as a "dependent"
