Recently I was hired as a Full-time Kennel Technician and I get paid salary $300 a week. Last Thursday it snowed and nobody showed up at work except the doctor, the receptionist, and of course me. I usually get my kennels done and I leave for the afternoon and come back around 5 pm to do the kennels again. Well Thursday, I helped the doctor and acted as a Vet. Assistant and assisted the doctor all day because there was NO ONE else there, and I still had to do my kennels. I did every thing that a vet. assistant does when they are there but they did not pay me for helping the doctor that day. They've done this before when I helped with a emergnecy c-section on a dog. I dont feel that it is right because I'm not being paid for a Vet. Assistant and I know they make more then me. Do you think they are using me?

Maybe, maybe not, but the real question is "ARE YOU GAINING EXPERIENCE" and becoming more valuable to the Vet?" or are you "Complaining" about the opportunity because it represents work you feel you arn't getting paid for. I'd say your time will come IF you step up and learn in the process. If it happens a lot, then ask for the raise. Until then keep learning when given the occasional opportunity.

I would continue working hard and when you have your anual review speak up and let them know. If you start complaining they will think another person that does not want to help because it is not in their job title, it is at Christmas and maybe your birthday that a company usually tries to do something special for that extra great staff, and I am sure the Vet with speak up for you too. But try to be patient Good luck, maybe you will be the assistant soon and making more money before you know it =)

well yeah they are a bit because they needed someone to act as a vet tech and there you were. if it really bothers you, talk to your boss. if you like filling in as a vet asst.--then tell him/her that its good experience and you like it, but just want to be fairly compensated for your time, especially if you're staying hours that you don't usually work. i'm sure they'll understand unless they're real cheap bast@rds. or you can act dumb and say you know, i didn't get any money in my paycheck for filling in last thursday....either way you should say something or they'll continue to take advantage of you. and if they don't compensate you, then it might be time to look for another job. good luck, and be assertive!

I am not sure that your position meets the requirements to be exempt (which means you don't get overtime). I would talk to your supervisor about it. If you feel they are and will continue to expect more of you than your position requires look for another job.
