I am currently a student, getting ready to file taxes. My mother does not have any income (besides SSI). I work a job while going to school and during the summer and I have helped her with many of her bills. A freind of mine told me that I am able to claim her as a dependent. Is this correct? And if so is this any in partciular that I would have to fill out, etc.?

She has to meet the requirements of a Qualifying Relative. One of the requirements is that you provide more than half of her support for the entire year.

Generally, you will need to have paid at least 50% of all of her bills to be able to claim her as a dependent. This includes rent, food, everything. There are four "tests" that must be met before you can claim anyone as a dependent.
This is an section directly from the IRS website (full text found at link referenced).
"To claim a dependency exemption for a qualifying child or a qualifying relative, the citizen, national, or resident test and joint return test must be met."

if you provide more than half of her annual support, for at least six months out of the year, she can be claimed as a dependent on your tax form. file as head of household, not a single. as it gives the best tax position. as head of household, she lives with you, and you provide he with support. she doesn't file at all.

Take her social security card with you, and if you have reciepts they may be helpful as well.

I don't know how it works with a parent, but with a child they need proof of who they are.
