i'm a single mom, my daughter is in my native land. i live here in US alone, i don't have any dependent here, i don't have a house. i worked a lot last year, making my gross high. i send most of my money to my daughter & family. when i file income tax, i wonder if i can claim my daughter as my dependent even if she's not here & even if she doesnt have social security number. i do have proofs of remittances. and my daughter's documents.

No,she does not have the Social security number, you can not claim her as dependent.Also.by the law,she has to live with you as least 6 months or more in a year .One thing I need to correct the other answer that she does not have to be U.S Citizen to be claim. Green Card is O.K.

That might be hard without a SS and NOT living with you,
But call the 1 - 800 - 829 - 1040 and ask them, not us.

No. She must have a SS#, or the IRS will disallow and attempts at filing for an exemption for her.

Also - I beleive she has to be a resident of the US to be claimed as well.

I do believe she has to live with you at least six months out of a year to claim her. As far as SS#...there are ways around that but from my understanding she DOES have to be living with you. Child support is not a deduction.
