I've played around with this scenario (as I'm sure many other have): say you win the lottery. What would be the best, and most stable, way to invest this so that you could live off a steady, fixed residual income based on the winnings, WITHOUT spending any of the winnings?
So say the reward was $1,000,000... is there a steady investment that would guarantee you 5% (so roughly the same as making $50K a year pre-tax).

Any thoughts about this? What would the best investment scenario be for a situation like this?

(and the irony is, I never play the lottery... but it's still fun to speculate)

Thanks for everyone that answered. Although the answers seem to be much varied, let me explain more in detail.

I drive 120 miles to work and back a day, averaging about ~$250-300 in gas a month. Is there somewhere on the tax return form or some provision where I can write this off?

I make enough from my web design 'job' at home to actually have to report it on my taxes, although I am currently disputing whether or not I should. (My brother takes projects on the side and outsources to me... no contract or anything... very casual). Obviously, my 'job' exists at home, for which I believe I am able to write off the cost of my computer, internet, phone, etc as long as it is used 100% for business purposes (which in my home office, I can argue it is). I also have a 9-5 that I commute to. Is there some way to justify my 'job' to job commute? From the response I got, I assume this is a write-off?

Thanks!

We entered a contract that says if you wish to cancel the contract before 180 days, you shall agree to reimburse the company (Koenig & Strey) for the marketing costs as shown in an itemized statement.

After we found out our realtor was not doing any good job, we tried to get out of the contract. But she said she will charge all the personal time she spent in selling the property. We told them we can only pay the marketing cost as provided in the itemized statement. She and her broker refuse to cancel the contract or take our property out of MLS. unless we pay them $1275.

They want to charge $1000 agent service fee in addition to $275 ads cost. Is it legal for them to charge $1000 service fee? In that case, they can charge $5000 if they want to. Are they blackmailing us? The contract did not say we should reimburse the realtor's time, hourly rate, etc. Is it ethical for them to charge something that's not in the contract? What is our best option in this situation?

I teach 3rd graders a 6 week segment on how to manage their money, in regards to saving and spending. I am stumped. Last week I handed out play money for them to use this week. I bought several items from the dollar store and put prices on them for them to "buy" them. I'm still intending on doing that, but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? The class is at 11:30 and I go to school at 10 for an English class so I only have about an hour for some help!

another ebay question- i want to open a ebay consignment store... how exactly does it work... i know how to list the items and all of the ebay part but how do you charge for the service to the original seller of the item? is there a set percentage to charge and what about ebay listing fees is that considered to be covered int he percentage or do you charge a listing fee also?! Then do we ship the item out or expect the original seller to ship it out... and if we do - do we charge for that also (packaging materials. time. etc.) or is that also included in the percentage charged to the original seller? Thanks for you help!

I have had a week off work (official holiday) then the week after was bank holiday so nobody worked anyway - on the friday i disovered my bank had withdrawn my overdraft from me leaving me to wait until tuesday to sort my bills/landlord etc out meaning a day off work - i rang them and told them exactly what is going on - today i woke up feeling way too stressed out to go to work cus of the financial problems I have but am worried to ring them - everyone has problems and they deal with it but it seems i dont have the energy to keep explaining and am slowly becoming a victim of my own circumstance - technically i cannot afford to work as the wage is poor and i dropped 6000£'s per year for this job due to being unemployed for 6 months - this has not helped - do i be open with my boss as he did help me out giving me the job in the first place

Ok here is the deal, I just got this temp job during the summer which was supposed to run for about 7-8 weeks. Ok the summer is done, but I was offered a permanent positon about 4 weeks into it. I said sure b/c it seemed like the only option for money at the time. But recently my manager is becoming really nasty, and "supposedly I have been losing money" and coming up short. I have no way to explain why? Simply because I really have no idea how the money disappears, I count and double count money that I give to customers, yet I have been short everyday this week. Not only that, my shortcomings have been announced to the ENTIRE office. So I feel uncomfortable and I just dont feel like staying there, plus the pay sucks! Anything that I should say? OR how should I go about it b/c my temp term is almost done?

(short of my parent sgiving all their money to charity, lol). I'm not sure if I'll need to pay it as it'll be split between me and my brother but it's good to know my options just in case.

How many small companies can run up a £30,000 electricity bill in a quarter? We've just had one. No surprises for guessing that Powergen sent an estimated bill.

In case you want to know, the meter in question is nowhere to be found in the building... Spooky, huh?
