I teach 3rd graders a 6 week segment on how to manage their money, in regards to saving and spending. I am stumped. Last week I handed out play money for them to use this week. I bought several items from the dollar store and put prices on them for them to "buy" them. I'm still intending on doing that, but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? The class is at 11:30 and I go to school at 10 for an English class so I only have about an hour for some help!

You might talk to them about buying something that will last only a few minutes (candy bar) or something that will bring satisfaction for a long time (a yo-yo).
Take examples of items to class and let them choose which they would buy if they could and then discuss the pros and cons of their choices.

I would stress an example of choices between spending now and getting an inexpensive item vs. saving and in a month (short length of time because they won't fathom any longer) being able to get the big item.
Be sure to include a couple of higher priced items on your display.
Our third grader loves money and knows the consequences of spending without planning. Money used to burn a hole in his pocket and now he saves two different ways. He has a bank savings and a piggy savings for short term stuff he wants. He splits all his money (mostly from gifts) 75-25 and manages well.
