We're having a debate and the moment between writing somewhere that inspires you, even if it may be distracting (an outdoor setting, for instance, or a favourite cafe) and writing in a silent edifice free from outside stimuli (such as a room at the back of the house).

We're trying to get at whether you should feed your imagination in order to write, or starve it so that it is forced to work overtime creating an alternative environment.

What do you think- what is your ideal work environment, right down to equipment you use and colours you like to be surrounded by?

Thanks!

PS, take a look at my 360 page and have a browse if you want to know a little more about me- I crave constructive criticism of my style so leave a comment or email me!

I am doing a report about a career that interests me. I want to write about novelists (and just authors and writers in general) but I can't think of a catchy title! Have any ideas?

On the MacmillanNewWriting website, where first time authors can submit story manuscripts, you are asked to include a biographical note in the email. Does this just mean a paragraph about yourself, or what? What details would you have to include? Thanks!

Either actual or self created, what's your opinion?
I realize there was a contest for this in New Zealand a while back, but what are your personal faves?

No historical romance, no jackie collins or cecelia ahern type books or trashy romance either please. Well written, good stories and interesting characters. Something that really affected you deeply. Contemporary or classics will be considered and as long as it's in english, based in any country! Help me with my decision to have a fantastic reading year.

"The all-time greats are mostly older books that have had time to 'mature', and were written during a 'golden literary age'.

What many consider to be great contemporary books, such as the Harry Potter series, and work by Tom Clancy and Stephen King (to name a few) are certainly well written but are not fit to be seen in the shadow of Tolstoy, Bronte, Dickens or even Tolkien.

The 'greats' of today will, for the most part, be the door-stops of tomorrow,"

The above statement was issued by a lecturer I had once during a heated debate at College. I agree to a certain extent in that a sentimental perspective does lend more established works a classical status, and that there is no denying the written word of the pre-World War era is significantly superior to contemporary equivalents although NOT WITHOUT EXEPTION.

This is my viewpoint although I am new to serious writing and study and am in no way an expert- I just want to learn.

How far would you agree with the lecturer?

Wanted to point you readers in the direction of my favorite author and American treasure, Pat Conroy. You may recognize him as author of the popular Beach Music, but I'd like to remind you of some other great titles like The Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini, The Water Is Wide, The Prince of Tides, and My Losing Season. His roots run deeply into the SC Low Country and the days of his young life at the Citadel in Charleston. Do you know him already? Care to discuss your favorite?

'About four days from the enchanted stream they came to a part where most of the trees were beeches. They were at first inclined to be cheered by the change, for here there was no undergrowth and the shadow was not so deep. There was a greenish light about them, and in places they could see some distance to either side of the path.'
Thanks :)
