I've been given a homework assignment to create a short story (about 1-4 pages) and I feel like doing something creative. Any ideas?

Follow the storyline of some other famous short story: like what happened with Nick in Hemingway's Indian camp. Or finish up some detective story. As the most suspicious man never found to be guilty he has to have a story after all about.

A short story about what is in peoples' minds...there are three friends that are going everywhere together; one day they went fishing. It was a bright, sunny day when they got to the river, but after a while the wind blew sand took them on the pick of a mountain and there they found three deers waiting for them. They got to a castle in few moments, here the Light was so special, so different and they wanted to know what was that but nobody was around. After an hour or two, while they went from one room to another something like a white big candle stopped in front of the castle, they went outside and the white candle put them together and went away with them in a green pasture...

For that short of a story, perhaps just write an elegant description of something. For instance after I read Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" I thought of trying to do a two page-long sentence. I ended up writing about a windstorm blowing against a door and forcing it open and closed.
Just look around you at anything and just try writing some story about it. Like if your bedroom door is closed, write about hearing something behind the door, seeing a shadow moving underneath the door, etc etc etc
