alex haley was a black american, he taught himself to write during a 20 year career in the US coastguard. He became its first chief journalist,a position he held until retiring in 1959 when he became a magazine writer and interviewer. His first book was 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X'. He then spent 12 years researching & writing Roots. Alex died in Seattle,Washington on 10th February 1992.
