Good news. You are correct. The only author is Thomas Harris. It was released back in October of '81 and published by G.P. Putnams and Bodley Head (USA and UK, respectively).

The title of this book refers to a painting, The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in the Sun (alternately known as The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in the Rays of the Sun, or simply as The Red Dragon) is a watercolor painting by the English poet and painter William Blake. Painted between 1806 and 1809, it can now be seen in the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.

Thomas Harris wrote Red Dragon. What you may have heard or confused is that there was a movie based on that book that came out much earlier than Silence of the Lambs and the eventual Red Dragon movie. This movie was called Manhunter. It came out in the mid 80's and had Brian Cox (who's been in just about everything) as Hannibal. Red Dragon was TH's second book after Black Sunday (not related to the other books, but very good too) but Silence was the first movie of the current Lecter bunch (with Sir Anthony Hopkins as Lecter).

As far as I could tell, Thomas Harris' "Red Dragon" was first published in 1981.

No. Thomas Harris is the author and the work was original. To prove this just go to amazon.com or barnes&noble.com and type in the title and see what results it brings.
