I am looking to understand how many Americans participate in book clubs and what the trends have been in this area.

Not sure if I put this question in the right section...but anyway.

Basically I've had this Barnes and Noble card for a while, but the store is sooooo far away. Plus the nearby Borders also has a wider selection of stuff. So really just a simple yes no question.

Have any books been written on the differences between British and American business cultures and dealings? I have found books on general cultural differences, but not on business in particular.

Does anyone here have a sensible explanation as to why Odysseus, a Greek of Ithaca, is able to freely converse with several different races of people, such as Alcinious the king when he is led to the palace by Nausikka who found him on the beach. Surely he coulndn't have learnt languages that fast, and that they could not all be Greek-speaking?
Also, why do many of the foreign races worship Greek gods? Surely they had little or no contact with Ithaca or Greece, except for the Phaecians who are sea-faring, and so it seems odd that Poseidon and Zeus are mentioned.
Similar thins happen in the Aeneid too. My theory is that both Aeneas and Odysseus are Trojan speakers, Aeneas because he is Trojan, Odysseus learning Trojan during the ten years of the Trojan War. The language of the Phaecians and also of Dido in the Aeneid, could be similar sounding and so both Aeneas and Odysseus could speak with them.

Now that I've been answering here for awhile, I can't help thinking about writing a book. Each chapter will discuss in detail the lessons I learned too late. First chapter will be "no hot fudge sundae tastes as good as being lean and healthy feels." What would you like to see for another chapter heading?

can somebody explain (scientifically) what it is that makes us attracted to someone. also, there is this boy i feel super attracted to & it goes both ways but we didn't click immediately. when we had our first conversation we didn't feel anything. however, when i met him the second time i could just tell we were drawn to each other. the attraction was very strong. so my question is why didn't i feel that the first time i talked to him. and what's it all about.

thanks.

A little bookstore whose mailing list I'm on sent me a wonderful email back in March detaling the James Joyce drinking game. The rules are simple: Read a paragraph. If it didn't make sense, take a drink. Eventually, it'll all make sense... :D

Anyone have any similar drinking games based on books?

It was a children's to young teen's book, and there were some unique characters with illustrations. There was a female character that was obsessed with raking leaves, and keeping her house and cupboards tidy, and another character that was very short and always wore a hat and scarf, and I thinkl an overcoat as well. I barely remember anything more than this, and the illustrations were unique, and the characters didn't really look too human, but were caricatures of a sort. This is all I have, and wish I could provide more detail. Any help is appreciated. I recall reading this in the late 1970's as a kid, and I think it was a paperback with either a red or brown-orange cover. Thanks!

I assume even before the series Angel there was the concept of the good demon or demonlike character in stories; perhaps myth as well. I suppose this could be related to the gargoyle myth, being that, as I understand it, they are supposed to be guardians. They do have a demonic appearance, but I'm not sure if that's the reason. When and where does the "good" demon idea originate in folklore, myth, fantasy stories, et al?

there are these bunch of evil galactic criminals from all over the galaxy and they are imprisoned and sent to earth on a fleet of DC-10s where they are all bombed to death by nuclear bombs.

later when humans evolve the spirits of the dead aliens possess them, and you must pay large sums of money to an organisation who brainwash you in order to exorsise the aliens and anyone who criticises this organisation is threatened with serious litigation.

What do you think, can I make money with this idea?
