It sound chick lit-ish but Summer Sister by Judy Blume is a great story about two little girls who have to deal with growing up. Sounds blase but it's really quite a good read. I know a lot of people reocmmend the book Pattern Recognition. I didn't like it but some peole rave about it so you could chekc that out too. Usually what i do is go to Borders or the book store and just browse the new reads until a cover hits my eye. Then I pick a chair in the back and read the first few pages.

"No chick lit stuff!" is a very sweeping statement - everyone to their own is fine by me but I read everything from Chekov to Chick lit and some chick lit I love. A good writer is a good writer whatever genre it is... (I used to be a sweeping ststement kind too lol)

Still, if your dead against all the books that fall into chick lit catagory I'd suggest James Pattersons womens murder club series. The first book in the series is called 1st to Die then 2nd Chance, 3rd Degree, 4th of July and lastly, The 5th Horseman. There fabulous books real page turners and fast paced. Have a look at them on Amazon and see what you think. Or you could try Harlen Cobens Series too.

Belinda Jones' On the road to Mr Right might sound like chick lit but it's a true travelogue and is very funny. (mind you, I love her Chick lit books too so maybe it's not for you) but if you ever get the urge to delve into the chick lit bog you should read some of hers - Divas Las Vegas a particular fav.

I just finished Jaqueline Carey's "Kushiel's Scion", her fourth book set in the world of Terre d' Ange. If you've not read the first three, I highly recommend that you begin at the beginning (Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen and Kushiel's Avatar, in that order) to understand what makes the protagonist in this novel so special, but it does work fairly well as a stand-alone novel.

Caveat: Carey has a penchant for graphic sex scenes. They are not gratuitous - the sexuality of the main characters is a very important part of who they are - but they are occasionally disturbing in their detail (particularly in the first three books. Phedre is, literally, a masochist, and a great deal of the plot hinges on her ability to withstand excruciating pain). The graphic sex may turn some readers away, but that would be a pity. Carey has created a rich, detailed world, and the story is quite compelling.

Jack Ketchum writes some very good books. They've often offended people and some were once banned, but you can find most of them now at any bookstore or even on EBay. I'm also reading a series of books by two authors named Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. They are very good. I could explain them to you, but it would take a very long time so it's best to look them up and see if they would interest you. I'm am a very avid reader & I read just about everything except for those trashy romance novels so if you ever want any kind of suggestions or want to discuss a book or anything, just drop me a line. :)

I don't know anything about your tastes, except that you say you don't want Chick lit. I've written several books. Some are novels, i.e. fiction; some are essays, i.e. fact. I've made comic books, for I am both artist and writer. I've had poems published in collections. They are in Chinese and in Japanese. Why don't you try writing something? You can begin with a short story. I did that and turned some of them into novels. When you write something, you can read it. I rewrite each book several times and proofread them several times as well. You can have your own project and read your story or book many times.

Heya,
Iv begun reading a book called 'Something Rotten' by Jasper Fforde.

Its a fiction book which is very funny!!
Its a mixture of Detective/Comedy where the characters jump in and out of the fiction world. The auther makes wacky comments refering the characters as being in real life comparing themselves to a fiction novel, its very funny but you need to read it to understand what im on about.

Im sure you will get into the book within the first page, im actualy recommending this book to everyone, its a must read!!

Just finished Jennifer Egan's The Keep.
It's set in an old European castle and features two cousins with a lifelong grudge to work out.
And then it twists, and twists again.
Honestly like nothing I've ever read before, and I tore through it in 3 days!

Right now I'm reading The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. It's a real-life murder mystery based in 1893 Chicago. Doesn't read like nonfiction - biting all my nails off!

The DaVinci code was great - couldn't put it down.
Devil Wears Prada was funny
