Foxing is a spotting effect. The yellowing/browning of the pages is called "tanning" or "toning". It's caused by the acid content in the paper.

lol i don't think it really has a technical name -- it has to do with acid content in the paper. paper was previously made of rags and cotton so older books are more durable than 20th century books. you can reverse the process by adding alkalines but most are already brittle anyway. In the 90s they started using acid free paper for most books.

It is an oxidation process. It can be cause by the bleaching of the paper in cheap paper as in paper backs. The chemicals are not rinsed out very well, to reduce the price of the paper.

It's just called yellowing. Foxing is when you get little spots caused by mildew.
