If you had enough money and had promised to buy your newly-wed son or daughter a house, then you heard that the child of a single parent in the poorer part of town would soon die unless s/he had costly surgery; assuming there is no other way the mother can pay for the surgery, would you break your promise to your own child to save another?

The meaning of marriage in Western culture refers to a life-long monogamous commitment. The decision to get married, therefore, entails that the individual denies his future self the possibility of re-evaluating its commitment.

If the individual is aware of the strenuous demands of marriage, and cannot live up to them, he ought not get married. However, if he chooses to get married, a later desire to get divorced is, in effect, invalidated by the meaning of the commitment which he made.

Thus, to get divorced demonstrates a cognitive failing - a failure to understand the meaning of marriage. Whether it is immoral, however, to break a promise which is fundamentally imprudent and irrational is less clear.

I am not into science fiction/fantasy/horror/crime so please don't suggest any of these.

The kind of books I have enjoyed:
A suitable boy, Jane Eyre, The time-traveller's wife, My sister's keeper (but don't like any other Jodi Picouldt), Written on the body, The kite-runner.

Thank you!

A friend of mine takes great pleasure in tarring me with the above epithet due to my feeble computer skills and my general reluctance to embrace technological advancements.

I vaguely remember my Grandmother telling about them but I can't remember if they were a political movement, disgruntled workers, or a biblical race.

Why would a prostitute not wish to fall in love? Even after she was offerred by this good woman a new, decent life? This prostitute, who is most determined to become a good woman, tries to persuade herself that she views Mr. R (the man she is attracted to) as a father? She tries not to fall in love with him, why? And is it possible for a prostitute to change into a better person? Or are they too phsycologically messed (though I'm sure they do have hope)? (The prostitute is like...18-19, the man is 35)
