Greece, as in a unified country didn't exist until after the Greek Revolution in the 1820's. Independence was declared in 1821, but it wasn't until 1829 that it was recognized.
However, Greece as in an area consisting of various City States has existed since 2700 + BCE.

Edit :

George V,
the Greeks do not owe anything to the Brits or to the west. Their freedom was obtained by brave men and women like Kolokotronis, Karaiskaikis, Bouboulina and the men and women who died fighting the Turks.
The west only put a restraint on the Greeks, the west, brits most of all had "economic" interests in the east so they tried to avoid conflict with Turkey at all costs.... Let us not forget what happened to the Greeks at what is now known as Izmir, or do you not know what happened there?

Greek War of Independence; 1821 - 1831
Ottoman Turks also known as the Ottoman Empire had ruled over this area since the 13th and 14th centuries after the fall of the Byzantine Empire centered around Istanbul (formerly known as 'Constantinople').

The French revolution sparked a resurgence of national pride everywhere and the aging Ottoman empire was not fully able to govern what it had effectively anymore.

Although conquered by Roman armies early, the Greeks managed to provide the educational and philosophical base to the Roman empire for centuries to come.

The phrase "It looks Greek to me" actually comes from the fact that most of the Roman empire was still using the Greek language for much of it writing. Briton Celts known as Druids learned Greek rather than Latin all the way up to the invasion of the British Isles by Julius Caesar in 54 B.C.E.

Officialy in 1831 but it was decided by the big powers of the time(France,England,Russia) since 1829.In 1829 the borders that were suggested by England,Russia and France were very small and the greek diplomats tried until 1831 to get as much land inside their borders and they did it.The first borders were peloponissos and sterea ellada only, the rest was added with later wars with Turkey(macedonia, thessalia and the islands of the aegean) and as presents by Italy,France ,Russia and England.Furthermore,Greece owes its liberty to England,France and Russia that managed not only by diplomatic action but with force as well to make the Turks leave Greece.Without the help from the west the Greece wouldn't exist as a country now.

The first President of Greece was Kapodistrias a greek who had a high postion in the ranks of the russian army.
