books i have read and loved this year:
Margrave of the Marshes by John Peel - its a book written with
great humour and love (his wife and son finished the book after his death)
The Island by Victoria Hislop - a story about a Cretan family who
had to send members to the island of Spinalonga due to leprosy
- dont be put off by this as its a great read
Letters Home by Alan Bennett - what can i say about this book than I love it - will not lend to to a soul - will read and re read it over many years its a joy - tears humour its all thereBennet is the master of making the mundane interesting - if you dont read it your are missing out on a great read.
Hope thats some help

Hi there. I cannot see much in the current answers for you, and you DO set an intriguing puzzle! I would suggest
The Remains of the Day, Kazuo Ishiguro.
I Conquer the Castle, Dodie Smith.
Fridays Child, Georgette Heyer.
Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Kate Atkinson.
To Serve Them All My Days, R F Delderfield.
Good range and every one a winner! If I was to go a bit off the wall, I might add
The Far Pavilions, M M Kaye.
Shogun, James Clavell.
Good luck, Steve.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, anything by Haruki Murakami
And if you liked Jane Eyre, than anything else by the Brontes you'll probably like too. Plus Pride and Prejudice is essential reading for anyone.

The best book I've read in the last year is "If Nobody Speaks of Remarkble Things" by John McGregor. Stunning stuff. Also Alain de Botton's "Essays in Love" (much funnier than it sounds), and "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind (an oldie but a goodie - it's being made into a film apparently, hope they don't ruin it!) Enjoy!!

I think you may like
Tha Abortionist' Daughter by Elizabeth Hyde
Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
Laughter in the Dark by Vladimir Nabokov
I think the first two should be appealing to you. I love the first one, it is really good!
