My brother-in-law and his sister are Hungarian. Their parents bribed border guards to get out and make it to Canada.
The Hungarians unfortunately thought that the U.S. would come and help them. But the U.S. didn't because that was considered soviet territory after WWII. The Soviets dealt with the uprising very severely!! They sent in tanks and 2 divisions of the Russian Army the Hungarian leader was shot and so were all who were caught in the uprising.
My brother-in-laws mother and father were lucky they had enough money to escape. Some who were caught trying to cross the border were also shot.
