Britain is derived from the name "Britannia" used by the Romans from about 55 BC,
Great Britain is possibly a translation of the French "Grande Bretange" used in France to differentiate Briton from Brittany which is "Bretange" in French.
On 22 October 1604 King James VI of Scotland, I of England proclaimed himself as King of Great Brittaine, France and Ireland. In 1707 an Act of Union joined the two parliaments of England and Scotland. It used two names for the new nation "United Kingdom" and "The Kingdom of Great Britain". In 1801 under a new Act of Union The Kingdom of Ireland which was ruled by the British Monarch merged with Great Britain to become The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the 26 out of 32 counties of Ireland were given independence, the remaining 6 counties became part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain being an abbreviation of this.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises of England, Scotland, Wales, the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the Isles of Scilly, the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland but not the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Some of the answers are really ludicrous. Great Britain was formed by the Union of England, Scotland ,Wales and the occupied territories of Ireland. When Ireland became a Republic, the term GB excluded Northern Ireland, so the country is now referred to as the UK - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It's confusing because the flag of the Union is made up of the flags of the patron saints of England, Scotland and Ireland (George, Andrew and Patrick) - as usual Wales is forgotten.
Nothing to do with the Empire and nothing to do with former colonies.

The term Great Britain was first used officially during the reign of James I of England in order to recognise the differences between the English and Scottish Parliaments (which still existed at the time). On 20th October 1604, James proclaimed himself "King of Great Brittaine, France and Ireland."
The 1707 Act of Union describes the newly unified state as the "Kingdom of Great Britain" and so it is safe to say that "Great Britain" refers to the countries of England, Scotland and Wales plus the outlying islands (although not the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands).

"Great Britain" is essentially the name of all the countries which recognize Queen Elizabeth II as their sovereign. This includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Canada and Australia.

¡Hola, Angel! Si quieres practicar tu inglés aqui, no sirve de nada porque muchas de estas personas no escriben bien su idioma.
However, to answer your question, I think we adopted the label "Great Britain" when the British Empire covered a large portion of the world. We haven't been doing too well since the empire was disolved and I believe they now call it the United Kindom of G.B. and Northern Ireland or UK for short.
Yo vivo en Guadalajara, México. Estoy muy feliz aqui.
Perdone mi español. Necesito practicar mucho.
¡Hasta luego!

Great Britain, geographically is basically the United Kingdom.
It came about when Britain had a big empire,
and the smaller countries of the UK; Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland were governed by England.
Britain short for Britannia.

Its the long version of the sticker we stick on the back of our car when we come to your country to warn you to get off the roads.
There's no such thing as GREAT Britain any more, we lost the right to that title when the twitter heads came into parliment.
