why did the USSR try to dominate Eastern European countries after 1945?

Well basically since the time of Napoleon Russia has been invaded by western European powers. The Russians wanted a buffer zone to defend the mother land. By recruiting men from these other countries into the Russian army, they could defend the mother land without wasting Russian lives. (you have to remember Russia lost 20,000,000 dead during WWII) Plus with the communist doctrine of global domination Russia took over eastern Europe. But also Roosevelt and Churchill basically signed eastern Europe away to Russia at the Yalta conference.

That's easy to explain: They were being paranoid about being attacked again. All of their history was filled with being attacked and attacked and attacked. Always it was on their land that the battles were fought. So they thought "Hey, lets create a strip of land around us, and if any fighting occurs, it will not occur on our homeland again. We'll fight on someone else's home. Kind of selfish but I would be the same if I had the same crappy history. The problem with this line of thinking was that Nuclear warefare came into play and the risk of massive land-based armies went away. Now there was no need for a "buffer zone". Eventually the US went into a spending "arms race" with Russia and this bankrupted Russia. It has also bankrupted the United States but so far the balance trade has kept it afloat, but the trade imbalance is continuing to explode and sooner or later the U.S. will go bankrupt just like Russia did. Simple as that.

Soviet Communism's goal was to spread communism through out the world by hook or crook. The defeat of Nazi Germany provided the USSR with the opportunity to establish Communist regimes in eastern Europe. The Yalta agreement provided for free elections in the eastern nations of Poland, Rumania, Hungary and others. However, the Russians reneged on the agreement and installed pro-communist regimes. Hence the beginning of the cold war.

After WWII, the winners - allies have split the occupied territories between themselves. hence Russia got Slovakia, Czech Republic, eastern Germany etc. to look after. Well, they did it in the only way the knew how to do it - by dictatorship and communism, since that was the regime in those days.

Anyways, countries take over other countries to extend their influence and power over and control resources and ecomonical processes in the countries. Hope it helps.
