I have a Paul Detlefsen painting titled "Horse And Buggy Days" it features a blacksmith working on an anvil in a red barn, a man paying attention to a white horse next to a black buggy, and a little boy with overalls and a straw hat standing with his hands behind his back and watching whats going on. I was just wondering about its date, how to find out wether it is a print or origianl, and possibly how much it is worth. Thank-You All.

It can be sad, funny, serious, adventurous or anything. It can be poetic, written in ordinary narrative. It can be true or fictional. It can be from today or years gone by. It be about you or anyone, but please don't speak ill of anyone.

This is for the course called Sports in American History. The paper is due December 4th, so I feel I should start working right now. I checked out some books on Jim Thorpe, footballer, but I don't know how my paper should go. Should I focus on one aspect, for example his influence on politics? I really don't know how I should approach. If you have written this kind of paper, please teach me what other references I need and the like. THanks

I'm currently readin "Teacher Man" by Frank Mc Court and it got me thinking about teaching English Literature. Can a book or literature in general actually be taught in terms of what it means? I stated in a previous question that a book is personal and it means different things to each individual reader. In English classes we are taught what a poem means or what a play means or a book but we can't really know these things without the author actually stating it as fact. Thus we are learning only what someone else thinks a book or poem means or what an examiner wants to hear.

If I write an essay on Hamlet stating that it was nonsense and meaningless to me and I justify it, I will still probably fail because I have gone against norm. Does this not defeat the whole exercise of teaching literature? Indeed can and should it be taught at all?

I've read many books, many of which are defined as classics but it kind of annoys me when people talk about the top five books ever or about classic books. When I read a book I either like it or I don't. Dickens for instance has never appealed to me. I find his writing utter tosh! Oscar Wilde on the other hand, I find witty, funny and thoughful. I have enjoyed Jeffery Deaver more than many classics but nobody would define his work as a classic. It will never be taught in schools or colleges and yet it has just as much value as any other book.

Should the term classic be done away with? In my view yes. I think a lot of people read these "classics" purely to sound impressive or because they have to read them for school or college or university. That to me doesn't make them any better. When we are talking about literature each individual book moves each individual reader in a different way. That is beauty of a book. Do you agree or disagree?
