I'm from a lower middle class family, and health care was nearly unmanagable for us growing up, so I only really visited the doctor for required shots, check ups and emergencies.
Now that I'm older and able to care for myself, I'm more health-conscious and want to have regular tests for cancer, diabetes, athsma, and the like. I want to make sure I'm healthy, because as far as I know, I could be living with some disease and not even know it.
I know many of these tests require special doctors, and I have no idea where to start. I don't want to walk into my family doctor's office and make a fool of myself because I don't know what I'm asking for. I want to test for everything. There's no such thing as a complete check-up that covers all diseases and illnesses, so I don't know what I should do.
Who should I go to? What are the most important things I should routinely check for? What are the names of some tests that are important? Please help. Any information would be appreciated.
